While Gran Turismo may have revolutionised the racing genre, there were plenty of games that helped pave the wave way for Sony’s blockbuster. Although a Japanese exclusive release, Taito Grand Prix - Eikou e no License for the Nintendo Famicom was one of the earliest career racers, allowing gamers to challenge for cash and purchase upgrades. As of today English speaking audiences can finally enjoy this obscure speedster thanks to a fan translation patch.
Although you could argue that a racing game doesn’t really need any prior explanation, the career mode of Taito Grand Prix features many menus in need of translation. This newly released translation patch ensures that all of the game’s dialogue is localised - including all of the cars, upgrades and tracks. And best of all, Taito Grand Prix is one of the few 8-bit racers out there to feature real cars such as the Mini Cooper and Ferrari BB512.
Those interested will need to have a legally obtained Taito Grand Prix - Eikou e no License Nintendo Famicom ROM file to apply the translation patch to. Full instructions on how to use the patch are available within the download below.
