Algunas novedades/rumores mas de los ultimos dias:

- El proximo titulo de Retro Studios aparentemente sera para NX, y seria una nueva IP.

- Axiom Verge podria ser un titulo de lanzamiento para la NX.

- La NX sera "una plataforma que los consumidores podran disfrutar un largo tiempo", segun las palabras del actual presidente de Nintendo, dicho en la reciente reunion de inversores. Tambien espera que la consola no sea vendida a perdida.

- Al mismo tiempo, Nintendo espera que las ventas de NX compensen las reducidas ventas de la Wii U.

Nintendo has long played to it’s own tune, content to wait to deliver the surprising news over it’s upcoming Nintendo NX console in it’s own time. Yet one it’s biggest partners may have let slip about one of the consoles more interesting features – the notion that it may be doing away with game discs all together and replacing them with ROM cartridges (Similar to the 3DS).

The speculation begins with Japanese Financial website Money-Link; which has indicated that Nintendo’s long time producer of ROM chips Macronix is expecting a bumper order from Nintendo in the latter half of this year for it’s products. They state (Translated below);

旺宏ROM晶片主要供貨給遊戲機大廠任天堂，第1季雖是銷售淡季，但營收表現仍與去年同期相當，吳敏求表示，由於任天堂才剛宣布，明年3月將推出新一代遊戲機， 並會在日、歐、美等三地同步開賣，所以今年下半年ROM可望擴大出貨，將有很大的成長潛力。

“Macronix’s ROM chips are usually supplied to videogame console maker, Nintendo. Although the sales is in off season during the first quarter, the revenue is similar compared with the same period last year. Wu Miin suggested that as Nintendo had just announced it will release a new generation console in March next year, and the console will be launched at the same time in Japan, America and Europe, so ROM’s sales is expected to increase in the latter half of this year, and it will have a large growth potential.”


Macronix are Nintendo’s long time go-to partners for the mask-rom memory – the guys behind the 3DS’s cartridges. Typically this would be put down to the Nintendo 3DS cartridges – but the reality is that Macronix recently began testing on it’s newer line of 32nm ROM chips – the Nintendo 3DS uses 75nm (With a max of 8GB storage) so these new cards won’t be used for that purpose. Unless the company is savvy to a big 3DS game we’re not aware of, or they’re developing for Nintendo’s next-gen handheld, we’d make a strong bet that it’s all linked to the NX.

It points to a new product line, which the company gladly further offers more proof of in their recent financial reports. These make mention of Nintendo several times and even call out Nintendo’s new console in the process; discussing how this will result in bumper offers (Credit to Jim_Cacher for the translation);

“Yesterday, non-volatile memory vendor Macronix (2337) announced that net loss per share of 0.25 yuan in the first quarter. Wu Miin, chairman of Macronix, stated that “the worst situation has passed”. He expects that the company can potentially get rid of loss in the third quarter as the orders of an important customer, Nintendo, will have critical impact. The company targets a profit-loss balance annually.”

过去旺宏全年业绩高峰大多出现在第3季，第4季则会下滑，但吴敏求指出，因为任天堂已宣布新平台将于明年3月推出，应会提早备货，旺宏今年第4季营 运可能和第3 季一样好。

“In the past, Macronix sales performance usually peaked at third quarter, while declined at the fourth quarter. However, Wu Miin pointed out that because Nintendo has announced that the new platform will be launched in March next year, orders should be placed in advance. Therefore, the operating revenue of Macronix in the fourth quarter may be as good as the third quarter.”

吴敏求指出，在任天堂新平台推出之前，今年ROM营收估计持平，但有成长潜能。至于NOR Flash业务，全球市占到去年已达21%，位居第二位，预期在今年接下来的某一季，有望跃升为第一大。旺宏预期今年75奈米以下NOR Flash制程产品会提升至五成，并销售更多高容量产品，车用领域业绩也会持续增加。

“Wu Miin noted that before the launch of Nintendo’s new platform, the sales of ROM is expected to remain unchanged in this year, but there is growth potential. In respect of NOR Flash business, market share in the global market has reached 21% last year, ranked second. It is expected to climb to first rank in a quarter next year. Macronix expects the sales of 75 nm, or below, NOR Flash process products will increase to 50% and more high-capacity products will be sold. Revenue of automobile sector will continue to increase.”


The second paragraph in particular offers insight into how the company is expecting a bumper order from Nintendo for it’s NX console. Of course this could all be linked to the BIOS hardware and not the actual game cartridges – but Macronix is obviously gearing up for something a lot bigger than they’re up to right now. Given the density of the card they’re reportedly producing; we’d suspect they’re going to be put to more use than for BIOs on the NX (The new cards have reportedly got a capacity of 32GB).

The move to cartridge based consoles holds many advantages for Nintendo. It allows Nintendo to get rid of disc drives entirely while making the console smaller and quieter. Typically they add to the bulk of a console and by removing discs from the equation; Nintendo can also decrease the need game installs (Something that PS4 and Xbox One owners are all too familiar with) as the read speed of cartridges are ahead of Blu Ray discs. It should also be noted that Panasonic (The guys that usually provide disc drives for games consoles) haven’t been talking about the NX or touting their involvement in that consoles development.

As stated, this is all subjective and wildly speculative. The chips could be very easily being used for BIOs purposes, but it’s interesting that Macronix are touting their involvement so heavily. We’ve already contacted Nintendo for feedback.

Traduccion: Nintendo volveria a los cartuchos?

Aparentemente los fabricantes que hacen las memorias para los cartuchos de 3DS estan testeando un nuevo tipo de memoria, mas pequeño y de mayor capacidad, que de no ser utilizado en algun juego de 3DS de exagerado tamaño o en la sucesora de la 3DS podria ser utilizado para la futura plataforma Nintendo NX.

Por supuesto esto no es mas que un rumor, pero si llega a ser cierto seria un giro mas que inesperado. ¿Al fin se cumplira el sueño de muchos de volver a ver una consola de sobremesa con cartuchos? ¿Sera este el tan ansiado fin de los discos opticos? Solo el tiempo lo dira...

No seria tan extraño juegos en memorias micro SD con capacidades de 64gb o 128gb dependiendo de las graficas del juego, asi como las de PSVITA y serian mas baratas que un disco BD y eso es muy bueno ya que los juegos podrian costar unos 40 o 30$, me parece bien y te evitas de tener lectoras en la maquina que se dañan, seria buena idea. Olvidate de ver juegos de 40 o 30 dolares. Un Bluray debe costarles centavos asi que dudo que se pasen a SD que seguro son mas caras y que encima te bajen el precio.
