** In the later 90s a whole host of first person shooters began making their way onto home consoles alongside their PC counterparts. As great as this was, there was a real lack of consistency when it came to each game’s control scheme, often leaving gamers struggling to get to grips with the 3D worlds in front of them. While this may have been down to a lack of dual analog sticks on some systems, it has now been addressed for a selection of FPS titles on the Nintendo 64.
Despite the struggles with control pad layouts on the Nintendo 64’s FPS selection, there was one title which just seemed to click with gamers - Goldeneye 007. This very title has not only provided countless memories amongst the gaming world, but also since sprouted a selection of communities such as Goldeneye Vault which offers various updates, map packs, and more to fans of the original.
Over at the Goldeneye Vault one hardcore fan of the Nintendo 64 has just released a collection of ROM hack patches. These updates effectively adapt the control schemes in the likes of Turok, Armorines, Forsaken, Duke Nukem 64, and Shadowgate 64 to offer something more familiar to Rare’s Goldeneye 007 pad layout.
By simply downloading these updates from the Goldeneye Vault, fans of the original titles can use the xDelta patching software to update their Nintendo 64 ROMs to use these new control pad layouts. Full details on what's been changed can be found on the project's page below. **
